June 15, 1994, Manos Hadjidakis died. Throughout his life, he composed enchanting music, embracing the audience with optimism and melody.
1960, he received the Academy Award for Best Original Song – the first time to be presented to a song originally written in a language other than English. In Greek, “Ta paidia tou Peiraia” (Melina Merkouri, Jules Dassin, Yorgos Zampetas). In English, “Never on Sunday” – a song which became an international sensation and was translated into many languages.
Legend has it that in the 1970s, Manos Hadjidakis threw the Oscar in the bin, with the cleaning lady finding it by accident.
